2022 WICKLINE SCHOLARSHIP

The Education Committee is pleased to announce our 2022 Wickline Scholarship recipients. Due to a generous contribution from US Bank, we are able to award a total of $6,000 this year. All of our applications this year included excellent educational goals. It is our pleasure to announce the following recipients:

Cristina Thomas will be awarded $2,000 and will use it to complete her Teaching Credential program through Fresno State College.  Cristina is a 38-year-old married mother of two young sons who has wanted to be an elementary teacher from a very young age.  After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree she and her husband decided to start their family rather than for Cristina to get her teaching credential.  Now that their boys are older and more self-sufficient, they decided it is time for Cristina to get her credential.  She has quit working and is focused solely on completing her education.  Cristina plans to have her credential by January, 2023, and to be teaching in her own elementary classroom here in El Dorado County where both she and her husband grew up and are raising their two sons.

Batya Copley will be awarded $2,000.00 to be used to continue her work towards a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing through Chamberlain College of Nursing, and eventually receive her RN.  At 22 years of age Batya applied for a Wickline scholarship last year, but was too young to qualify.  With the revised minimum age now 22 years, at 23 years old, she now qualifies and decided to try for a scholarship again this year.  Since Batya was a little girl she has always felt it was her calling to help others in any way she could and to do whatever she could to take away their pain or hurt.  Batya will continue working at Marshall Medical Center while pursuing her nursing degree.  The scholarship will help reduce the amount of loans necessary to complete her RN.   She looks forward to becoming an excellent nurse, helping our community, and giving back to others.

Nora Sharp will receive a $2,000 award and use it to complete a Masters in Organizational Management through the University of Massachusetts Global.  In addition to working on her MA, Nora is the mother of two young sons and also works full time for the El Dorado Public Guardian as the Deputy Public Guardian.   She also is an active member of the 20-30 Club.   At 38 years of age, she wants a Master’s Degree because she feels “somewhat under accomplished”.  She will be the first of her family and friend group to accomplish this, so she’s not sure why she feels this way, but it is something she needs to do for herself.  Nora also sees it as a teachable moment for her boys, showing them the value of working hard towards a goal you set for yourself.  She is currently funding her program with federal student loans and hopes for a scholarship to help ease her debt burden.  Nora isn’t sure what her future looks like after she completes her MA, whether she’ll stay in public service or go into the private sector.  However, she does know she wants to stay in a field where she can help those less fortunate than herself.

The Wickline Scholarship was established to assist women over the age of 22 who reside on the western slope of El Dorado County and are furthering their education and career by pursuing a post-secondary education. The Wickline Scholarship is an award of up to $2,000 distributed annually to one or more recipients. Applications are scored by financial need, personal history and completeness of application.

A legacy gift from Marian Wickline in 2009 as well as a generous gift from US Bank provides the opportunity to offer this scholarship.
