2021 Wickline Scholarship

The Education Committee is pleased to announce our 2021 Wickline Scholarship recipients. Due to a generous contribution from US Bank, we are able to award a total of $6,000 this year. All of our applications this year included excellent educational goals. It is our pleasure to announce the following recipients:

Tania Langland will be awarded $2,000 to complete her Masters in Health Care Administration from the University of Phoenix.  At 35 years of age and a single mother of an eight-year-old, Tania wants to set a good example for her daughter and other young women and show that education is key to realizing your dreams.  She is currently the Social Services and Activities Director at the Western Slope Health Center and returned to school eight years after earning her bachelor's degree.  Tania has returned to school to further her career in healthcare and continue to enrich patients' lives.  Her long-term goals are to obtain a skilled nursing administrator's license and ultimately lead her own skilled nursing facility, hopefully in El Dorado County. Tania expects to complete her Master's Degree in July of 2021.

Terrie Fleishman will be awarded $2,000 to complete her nursing studies at the Charles A. Jones Vocational School of Nursing. Terrie is a 62-year-old Air Force veteran of Desert Storm who recently returned to school after raising her three children.  She continues her nursing education while working as a home health care aide for Visiting Angels. Terrie plans to continue working with Visiting Angels part-time while completing her nursing program.   She has applied for the Wickline Scholarship to help with the cost of completing the accelerated clinical portion of the program. Terrie expects to complete her nursing program in September of 2021 and continue in the field of home health care.

Mindi Merrill will be awarded $2,000 to continue her studies toward a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work.  Mindi is a thirty-year-old single mother to two daughters, who was raised in El Dorado County and graduated from Union Mine High School.  She has faced severe adversity in her young life - parental abandonment and incarceration, exposure to drugs, violence and criminal behavior during her childhood.  Mindi is also a cancer survivor who received treatment for cancer in between the birth of her children.   She is currently enrolled in Folsom Lake College with a plan to transfer to Sac State to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Mindi works for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northern Sierra as a Program Manager.  Mindi plans to ultimately obtain a Master’s Degree in Social Work and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  She strives to create new norms for her children and teach them the importance of a life of service.

The Wickline Scholarship was established to assist women over the age of 22 who reside on the western slope of El Dorado County and are furthering their education and career by pursuing a post-secondary education. The Wickline Scholarship is an award of up to $2,000 distributed annually to one or more recipients. Applications are scored by financial need, personal history and completeness of application.
